Joris’ story: a head for numbers

Share this article:

A cheerful guy with finance in his genes

You cannot miss Joris (31) with his twinkling eyes and broad smile. He and his wife Danielle live in Veldhoven with their contact pet dog Dirk. By the way, contact dog Dirk is not their pet: Daniëlle works with people with dementia. Dirk provides some extra color to their lives every day. This immediately says something about Joris' motivation: ‘It just makes me happy to help people. Both privately and in my work.’

A love for numbers is in Joris' blood. Well, what are your options if your sister is a chartered accountant, your brother-in-law a controller and your brother working in a financial position at a pension fund? Joris' father, on the other hand, is a true maker, and headed a steel company’s workshop for years. Later he made the switch to account manager. ‘I like the fact that my job at Gielissen straddles both these aspects: controller at a company in the manufacturing industry.’

A soft landing

Joris embarked on his adventure with Gielissen just over six months ago. ‘At the job interview I got to know Gielissen as a hardworking organization, where challenges are tackled as a team, and everyone is equal. This had enormous appeal for me.’

‘Well before my first working day, I received a personal card from my new colleagues, which made me want to start work even more! During my onboarding period I was given plenty of time to get to know the organization and the people. We had an onboarding day with all the new colleagues. During the onboarding day, we visited other locations, played a sustainable game, and built our own booth. I hope to visit another location in Amsterdam in combination with a visit to PLMA.’

What makes it fun

As an assistant financial controller, Joris ensures his financial reports are accurate. He combines his tactical analyses with operational implementation. This is how he contributes towards the important decisions that help to achieve Gielissen’s ambitions for growth. And what do you know, this is exactly the kind of thing that Joris loves to do!

‘Throughout my studies and internships, I discovered that my interest did not lie in traditional accountancy work, but in analyzing data and creating useful reports. My experience within accountancy reinforced my preference for business, where I can focus on creating valuable reports to help organizations move forward’.

The complexity of the projects really appeals to Joris. 'I can completely immerse myself in them. This helps me to continue to develop. Determining margins, recording hours, entering purchase invoices per project. Sometimes bringing everything together can be quite complex. We also create super cool projects for major brands and clients. I never give much thought to the fact that I am also a part of them. They aren’t my creation, but I do get to contribute to the success’.
