Women you can build on: the strength of a softer approach

More than just work

Initially, VOOTB chiefly comprised project managers and (interior) architects. It was modest in size and intended to offer women a platform to encounter each other, both in professional and personal spheres. ‘Women often have a different perspective regarding projects and work, their focus leaning more towards details and balance,’ explains Manon. The network is all about strengthening the bonds and sharing experience, with women helping and inspiring each other.

New motivators

To strengthen the network even more, other colleagues Meggy and Mireille joined. Meggy, with her track record in sustainability, DEIB (diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging) and social policy, contributes valuable knowledge about inclusion and socially responsible enterprise. Mireille is a formidable organizer and ensures everything runs like clockwork. Their input helps the network to support across the board and delivers more impact.

Industry challenges

Women in the construction industry still encounter obstacles, such as unequal salaries and the feeling that they are not always taken seriously. ‘Unfortunately, it is still common that women have to work harder to get their voice heard,’ says Manon. Meggy adds: ‘Women are often confronted with prejudices about their knowledge of technical matters and skills. Even though they have the same capacities as men, their expertise is questioned more often.’

A relaxed approach

At VOOTB, we do not over pack the program. ‘We have consciously opted to create space to really get to know each other and connect,’ says Manon. The meetings often host a guest speaker – usually a woman from the network or another figurehead. ‘This is how we provide new insights and inspiration, but always in a relaxed fashion,’ relates Mireille. The focus is not just on work, but also on personal growth and balance.

Dutch Design Week

During Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven the VOOTB organized a tour of the projects by female designers, with a focus on sustainability. ‘A packed program doesn’t work,’ says Meggy. ‘We wanted enough time for interaction.’ This year, the group visited inspiring projects in locations like Sectie-C and Strijp-S. Manon emphasizes, ‘It is not just about networking, but also to inspire each other and to showcase the multi-faceted character of the industry.’

Future plans

Although VOOTB continues to grow, the goal is to keep it open, inviting, and personal. ‘We don’t want to become an exclusive network, but a place where women can find and strengthen each other,’ says Manon. Meggy sees plenty of potential for the future: ‘We want to inspire young women to enter technical industries and to show that there is space for a different, more connective approach.’
